Levitra (Vardenafil)

Levitra is a medication that’s used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It works by relaxing blood vessels so that, along with stimulation, there can be an increase in blood flow to the penis.

Levitra side effects

As Levitra works by relaxing the walls of blood vessels, it can affect your blood pressure, including dangerous and sudden drops in blood pressure. These side effects can occur even if you do not have any existing issues with blood pressure. Blood pressure and blow flow issues can present themselves as:

  • Blacking out while standing
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Numbness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tingling

Be sure to tell your doctor if you have an existing heart or blood pressure condition and to report any symptoms you experience.

Other more minor side effects of Levitra include:

  • Flushing – Your face and chest may turn red, feel hot to the touch, or tingle while taking Levitra.
  • Headache – You may experience a headache after taking Levitra and for a short while afterwards.
  • Cold-like symptoms – Some users report cold-like symptoms such as runny or stuffed nose and sinus pressure.
  • Upset stomach – You may experience upset stomach if you take the medicine on an empty stomach. If this happens, try taking Levitra with a small amount of food.

Another common side effect of Levitra, which may be minor or serious, is vision problems. You may experience blurry vision, a blue tinge to your vision, or even vision loss due to reduced blood flow to the eyes. These symptoms may clear up once Levitra is out of your system, but there is the potential that you’ll need medical help. You are more likely to experience these side effects if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are a smoker, or are over the age of 50.

How to use Levitra

Levitra is used on an as-needed basis to help with the inability to get or maintain an erection. You should take your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Taking more than prescribed can lead to serious side effects.

Most doctors start Levitra (Vardenafil) dosage at 10mg. Depending on how you respond, your doctor may increase your dosage to 20mg or adjust it in increments of 5mg to find the right dosage. Your doctor may write a prescription for 20mg to offset the cost of the drug. If you’re prescribed 10mg, simple split a 20mg tablet in two and take half. Do not take more than prescribed.

Take Levitra about an hour before planned sexual activity. You will not experience a spontaneous erection—manual stimulation is required. The effects of Levitra generally last for about four hours. You should only take Levitra once per day.

If you experience an erection for longer than four hours or an erection that is painful, immediately seek medical help.

Levitra can be taken with or without food, but you should avoid taking it after a big or high-fat meal as it may not work as effectively.

Levitra warnings

  • Avoid grapefruit while taking Levitra as it may cause an increase in side effects
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Levitra as it may also cause more serious side effects
  • Do not take recreation drugs at the same time as Levitra as you may induce heart or blood pressure problems
  • Let your doctor know about all other medications you may be taking. Levitra may interact with some other drugs, such as antibiotics, antifungals, blood pressure medication, heart medicine, and HIV treatments.
  • Levitra may also interfere with herbal products and vitamins. Ask your doctor about possible interactions or check the labeling instructions of these other remedies.

Does Levitra protect against STDs?

Levitra does not protect against sexual transmitted diseases (STDs). When taking Levitra, you are just as susceptible to contracting illnesses like herpes, HIV, and syphilis. The only way to prevent STD infection is to practice safe sex techniques, including condom use.

Does Levitra prevent pregnancy?

Levitra is not a contraceptive, so it does not prevent pregnancy. This medication has no effect on sperm count, so if you and your partner do not use a reliable form of contraception, such as condoms or birth control pills, pregnancy is a possibility.
