Levitra is a medication that’s used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It works by relaxing blood vessels so that, along with stimulation, there can be an increase in blood flow to the penis.
As Levitra works by relaxing the walls of blood vessels, it can affect your blood pressure, including dangerous and sudden drops in blood pressure. These side effects can occur even if you do not have any existing issues with blood pressure. Blood pressure and blow flow issues can present themselves as:
Be sure to tell your doctor if you have an existing heart or blood pressure condition and to report any symptoms you experience.
Other more minor side effects of Levitra include:
Another common side effect of Levitra, which may be minor or serious, is vision problems. You may experience blurry vision, a blue tinge to your vision, or even vision loss due to reduced blood flow to the eyes. These symptoms may clear up once Levitra is out of your system, but there is the potential that you’ll need medical help. You are more likely to experience these side effects if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are a smoker, or are over the age of 50.
Levitra is used on an as-needed basis to help with the inability to get or maintain an erection. You should take your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Taking more than prescribed can lead to serious side effects.
Most doctors start Levitra (Vardenafil) dosage at 10mg. Depending on how you respond, your doctor may increase your dosage to 20mg or adjust it in increments of 5mg to find the right dosage. Your doctor may write a prescription for 20mg to offset the cost of the drug. If you’re prescribed 10mg, simple split a 20mg tablet in two and take half. Do not take more than prescribed.
Take Levitra about an hour before planned sexual activity. You will not experience a spontaneous erection—manual stimulation is required. The effects of Levitra generally last for about four hours. You should only take Levitra once per day.
If you experience an erection for longer than four hours or an erection that is painful, immediately seek medical help.
Levitra can be taken with or without food, but you should avoid taking it after a big or high-fat meal as it may not work as effectively.
Levitra does not protect against sexual transmitted diseases (STDs). When taking Levitra, you are just as susceptible to contracting illnesses like herpes, HIV, and syphilis. The only way to prevent STD infection is to practice safe sex techniques, including condom use.
Levitra is not a contraceptive, so it does not prevent pregnancy. This medication has no effect on sperm count, so if you and your partner do not use a reliable form of contraception, such as condoms or birth control pills, pregnancy is a possibility.
